Aerial view of Lviv. Founded by Prince Daniel of Halych in 1256, for centuries it was repeatedly sacked by foreign aggressors, but rebuilt and its treasures restored by craftsmen, architects, and men of arts and letters. In 1998, UNESCO recognized Lviv as a World Heritage Site as an outstanding example of the fusion of the architectural and artistic traditions of eastern Europe with those of Italy and Germany. On the right: the City Hall (1827-1835) and its tower; in the centre, the Latin cathedral (1360-1479). |
