On January 19 of every year, Christians around the world celebrate the baptism of Christ by St. John in the River Jordan. During this Feast of Epiphany, known as Yordan in Ukrainian tradition, religious leaders bless water in the churches and the next day blessings often take place near local rivers and lakes. Many people collect samples of the sanctified (holy) water, keeping it in their homes for the rest of the year. In 2002 during Yordan, Filaret, patriarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate, blessed the waters of the Dnipro River.
