Modern cossacks perform a traditional ceremony atop the historic Khotyn Fortress, Chernivtsi Oblast. Countless Cossack lives were lost in a 1621 battle when the army of Hetman Petro Konashevych-Sahaydachny captured this fortress from the Turks.
