Member Count
Doris Watson has taken a count of all the members registered in our
associations and we learn that there are less than 1000 members. This
is a serious situation, as we believed that there were approximately
2000. Your executive will address this matter, but we would like all
associations to give "membership" a high priority and use whatever
creative means to attract new members.
Encyclopedia of Ukraine CD-ROM Project
Treasurer Ron Malashewski has researched the possibilities further, of
the transfer of the five volumes of the Encyclopedia to CD-ROM. Ron
reports that the actual transfer is the easy part of the job, compared
with the labour-intensive editing and updating that is required. Even
more important is the preparation of a marketing strategy. We need to
know before the works are transferred to CD-ROM, that the product will
sell. All of our research is done in communication with the Canadian
Foundation for Ukrainian Studies (CFUS). The Federation is acting
primarily as encouragement, support, and research, as the Encyclopedia
is the domain of CFUS.
UCPBF Board Changes
Daria Luciw of Edmonton resigned from her position as representative of
Publicity on the board. Daria's schedule has become very busy and she
does not feel she can fulfil her mandate with the Federation. Her
business includes fund raising drives for the Robin Hood Association for
the Handicapped ($1 million), Medicine Hat College ($2.75 million),
Newman College and Seminary - Edmonton ($8 million), as well as other
important campaigns for the Canadian Mental Health Association, Boyle
McCauley Health Centre and the Canadian Chapter of an International
Charity called "Children in Crises". Best of luck Daria. We're proud
of you!
Bree Verity of Calgary, who has been acting as the volunteer assistant
to Daria, has agreed to fill the position as representative of
Publicity. Bree has been an enthusiastic member of the Federation and
has offered her expertise to all our member associations. We're
fortunate to have her on the team.
Stephen Jakymiw of Calgary has accepted the position of vice president
of Marketing on the board. Stephen is vice president of TransCanada
PipeLines Limited in Calgary and lends his experience to our board. His
first major task is to advise the board on a marketing plan for the
proposed transfer of the Encyclopedia of Ukraine to CD-ROM. Welcome
Stephen.
Margret Kopala of Ottawa has agreed to accept the position of
representative for Research. We have asked Margret to work with the
Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) and the Ukrainian Canadian Civil
Liberties Association (UCCLA) to develop a position paper for the
Federation on major issues like the internment of Ukrainians during
World War I in camps across Canada and the Deportation and
Denaturalization situation. Thank you Margret for accepting this
important role on our board.
SUSK Congress
Donna Korchinski and Doris Watson will be in Toronto and Hamilton
February 19 to 22. They will attend the SUSK Congress in Hamilton, and
they're planning to meet with the executive of SUSK, and with the
Hamilton and Toronto associations and Toronto board members. They are
also planning other meetings which will be reported on in future
newsletters.
