HISTORICAL WALKING TOUR

PARLIAMENT HILL AND ENVIRONS

With emphasis on Ukrainian-Canadian connexions

(if our guide is to be believed)

Learn about:

The skating sex scandal that led to a statue of Galahad being put up on Parliament Hill~how the Americans spied on the prime minister~see the best set of mosaics in Canada~see the statue that was resurrected from its burial site in a parking lot~Canada’s monument to political patronage~how a military badge symbolized divorce~the oldest ‘temporary’ building in Ottawa ~the three-day riot that was the precursor to democratic government~when, and how,  the habit of going to Hull for a good time started

Oh yes-

And all the usual stuff about buildings going up and down up, the first Ukrainian to clean up Parliament, the first Ukrainian in the Commons, the Senate, the Supreme Court, Cabinet, (fill in the blank), telling good architecture from bad, why Victoria’s lion was castrated, who really ran business in Ottawa, assassinations, the Ukrainian who fashioned the statue of Diefenbaker, and Scots everywhere!

The tour will end at a local drinking establishment, where all will be encouraged to ply the guide with  well-earned libations

The Second Annual Walking Tour was absolutely great! Everyone learned
something about their city and nation's capital...and who would've
thought Americans were spying on the Hill? They seem like such
friendly people! The well coordinated mid-tour break gave everyone a
chance to relax and have a cold drink...everyone got tonnes of fresh
air...and what a great wrap up at D'arcy McGee's on history rich
Sparks St.

Big round of applause to Borys Gengalo for organizing and leading the
tour...what an impressive show of historical knowledge and insight.
Well done Borys!!!

Check the Photos section for some great shots of the tour. If you
attended the tour, you are encouraged to post a comment with your
thoughts...anyone else please feel free to leave a personal remark too!

Thanks to everyone who attended, it was great to see familiar faces
and meet new ones!

Some of the participants enjoyed a stop at D'arcy McGee's Irish Pub
