COME FOR THE LANGUAGE,

STAY FOR THE FOOD:

Adult Ukrainian Language Immersion Camp 2006, Crystal Lake, Saskatchewan

This August, I had the good fortune to attend the Adult Ukrainian Language Immersion Camp at Camp Trident at Crystal Lake, Saskatchewan.  It was a fun and enlightening experience.

The camp offered two programs of study.  Campers could choose the weekend program, which ran from Thursday to Sunday with beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes.  Those seeking additional practise at the intermediate and advanced levels could extend their stay to the following Friday.

I was in the intermediate class and stayed for the extended program.  During the day, we attended classes where we expanded our vocabulary, practised dialogue, and improved our overall language proficiency.  Some afternoons, we took field trips to local area churches and museums.  In the evening, we participated in Ukrainian cultural activities--icon painting, embroidery, singing, and dancing.  The camp was the first opportunity I had to try Ukrainian dancing, and I was impressed with how fun and vigorous a workout it proved to be.  Such exercise was necessary, given the quality of the food the cooks served.  Dinner each evening was a banquet of delectable Ukrainian and Ukrainian Canadian favourites.  It was like being on a Ukrainian cruise ship--and I came home with the extra weight to prove it.

I am already looking forward to attending camp again next summer, hopefully in the company of other National Capital Region types.  Anyone looking to improve his or her ability in the Ukrainian language would be well served by a stint at the Adult Ukrainian Language Immersion Camp.

ALBOTA BLAMES UCPBA(O)

FOR UPCOMING HAPPY MARRIAGE !

In a note to friends, UCPBA(O) member Robert Albota wrote:

Ivanna Henry and I are planning to tie the knot at the Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral on Saturday. February 10, 2007.  Father Ihor Okhrimchouk will conduct the marriage ceremony. A few of us single guys will go skating on the Rideau canal in the morning and we will drink copious amounts of Caribou to keep us warm on the ice. We plan to make it to the church on time. Our post-wedding honeymoon trip will be to Ukraine in the early summer of 2007... after Lent and after the federal election.. which is why we decided to get married in the winter: counting on Canadians having the good sense to not want another winter election.  We intend to purchase a new home in Aylmer and will be moving in to our new digs along with our German Shepherd, Loca, and our three cats, Princess, Houba Luba, and Mandrake. (Sadly we recently had to give up our cat Natasha and our new dog, Henry, to loving families because too many pets were eating us out of house and home).  The addition of one or two bipeds to our family are a definite possibility in the next few years. Stay tuned.

As you may know, Ivanna and I met at an unofficial UCPBA Ottawa event -- a birthday party for Olya Henry-Korzachenko in October 2004 hosted by Iris Bradley. The happy event was attended by several UCPBA-Ottawa members including Andrei Sawchuk and Victoria Tytarenko.  Vicki Karpiak (a.k.a. Cupid of the Carpathians) was our unofficial agent, but as far as we know, she hasn't charged us a finders fee- yet. The chaperones at our first date were Victoria Tytarenko and Maryna Tserkovnytska.  In late June, early July 2006, we had the pleasure of visiting Ivanna's mother, Olya, and Vasyl Korzachenko (the Consul-General of Ukraine in Chicago) in the Windy City. So the hidden hand of UCPBA Ottawa has been guiding us all along...
