Honourary Member, UCPBA(O) Peacefully on Friday, March 23, 2007. Irene Gayowsky in her 102nd year. Beloved mother of Cornelia Kuchmy of Surrey, England and former UCPBA(O) members Nestor Gayowsky and his wife Tela of Qualicum Beach, British Columbia. Irene came to Canada in 1910 , at the age of six, accompanying her parents from Western Ukraine. Following Normal School, she began a life-long career in education at the age of 17 which ended, except for interludes of raising her two children, in 1969. Her energy, love and teaching, intellectual curiosity (international travel was one aspect), openness and liveliness of mind will be dearly missed by her family, many friends and neighbours both in Winnipeg and Ottawa. She was an active member of the Winnipeg Ukrainian Community and volunteered in many organizations there, particularly at the Ukrainian National Home prior to her move to Ottawa at the age of 86 Interment will be alongside her beloved husband at All Saints Cemetery, Winnipeg at a later date.
