Canadian Community Conference

There was a community conference for all Ottawa Area Ukrainian organizations and institutions on November 23, 1996 in the Champlain room of the Regional Headquarters Building, 111 Lisgar Street, Ottawa.

The main goal of the conference was to bring representatives of every Ukrainian organization into one place to discuss:

  • the purpose, goals and objectives of their particular organization.

  • issues that concern the Ukrainian Canadian Community.

  • methods to improve communication, coordination and assistance among the various Ukrainian groups in the Ottawa area.

  • getting more community use of the Community Centre on Carling Avenue. Perhaps turning it into a resource centre?

There was also be a discussion about the creation and maintenance of an area of the National Capital Freenet( Now in operation! ) as a directory of Ottawa area Ukrainian Canadian organizations as well as a special interest group discussion section.

This years turnout was smaller than the community conference in 1995, but 11 organizations were represented by the participants.

There will be another community conference in the fall of 1997.

Canadian Community Conference

There was a community conference for all Ottawa Area Ukrainian organizations and institutions on October 15, 1995, 2:30 pm in the Champlain room of the Regional Headquarters Building, 111 Lisgar Street, Ottawa.

Another goal of the conference was the compilation of a special directory of Ukrainian organizations and institutions in the Ottawa area.

The Directory of Ukrainian Organizations will then be distributed to the local Churches, the Community Centre, the Credit Union, the Ukrainian Information Bureau as well as the Embassy of Ukraine. This directory will be maintained and new versions will be printed and distributed as is required.

The Directory of Ottawa area Ukrainian Organizations and Institutions will be a useful guide for new members to our community as well as residents of the Ukrainian Canadian Community in the Ottawa area.

There was also be a discussion about the creation and maintenance of an area of the National Capital Freenet( Now in operation! ) as a directory of Ottawa area Ukrainian Canadian organizations as well as a special interest group discussion section.

The format of the conference:

Conference started at 2:30 pm

  • Each group gave a brief(ten minute) presentation describing the goals of their organization as well as well as explaining membership requirements, location and dates of meetings and information on how to contact the organization for membership information.

  • After the formal group presentations, the conference participants engaged in an open "round table" discussion on issues that concern the participants. The big issue concerned the situation of the Community Centre on Carling Avenue. The big problem is that local Ukrainian groups can no longer use the centre because it is being leased out to a private school in order to help pay for the operational costs of the building. There will be other follow up meetings to try and work out a proper solution to this problem.
