Nash on Holodomor for Toronto Students

Peggy Nash writes John Campbell, Chair and Trustee Ward 2, Etobicoke Centre, Toronto District School Board –February 14, 2008

I was very encouraged to learn that the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) was initiating a Genocide study program for Toronto students. As a firm believer in education as the best form of genocide prevention, it’s essential that our young people understand the massive genocidal tragedies in our history in various parts of the world.

I was concerned, however, to learn that the Ukrainian Holodomor was not included in this study program. The Holodomor was a horrifying genocide whereby millions of Ukrainians perished. This year marks the 75th Anniversary of this tragic event. I am including for your information a booklet produced by the Government of Ukraine on the Holodomor. Commemorative events will be held around the world such as the one Parliamentarians held in Ottawa late last year.

Several of my constituents have contacted me about this omission. I realize that the school curriculum cannot be all things to all people; however I do believe that this omission is significant and ought to be corrected.

If I can assist in providing resources or contacts about the Holodomor please let me know. Also, I know that the Ukrainian community would be very willing to meet with TDSB to assist in providing the necessary background on this tragedy. Many thanks for your attention.
