Harper Tusk Conversation

On February 4, 2014 Prime Minister Stephen Harper spoke with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk about the situation in Ukraine.

The leaders shared their concern about the potential for increased violence and the government of Ukraine’s move away from the values of freedom and democracy. They agreed the situation remains very serious. Prime Minister Harper underlined, in particular, what he sees as a tendency toward the repressive totalitarianism of the past.

Prime Ministers Harper and Tusk discussed the potential for additional measures, including sanctions, which continue to be considered and could be implemented if the situation in Ukraine worsens. They agreed on the importance of a coordinated international response and committed to working together.

The Prime Ministers concluded their conversation by agreeing that they will continue to monitor the situation closely, and will remain in touch with the Ukrainian communities in their respective countries.
