A diamond surprise for a dynamic woman

L. to R.: Katherine Sencio and Dipika Damerla, MPPDipika Damerla, Ontario MPP for Mississauga East-Cooksville presented the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal to Katherine Sencio on January 27th, 2013 at St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral Hall. The surprised Mississauga resident was speechless when Ms. Damerla called her name to present the Medal at the Ukrainian Women’s Association’s Annual General Meeting that Sunday afternoon.

Katherine Sencio has been a dedicated member of the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada, Knyahynіa Olha Branch for the last 25 years, of which the last 22 years as a member of the Executive, serving as Correspondence Secretary. In addition, Katherine served for four years as a member of the Eastern Executive of the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada.

She is the woman in the front lines helping people out with their challenges. She is the person who convinces the young and the old to become part of the Association in order to enrich the Ukrainian heritage and above all, she spends much of her time and energy making sure that our new Canadians feel at home,” said Dipika Damerla.

In 1970, Katherine married Bohdan Sencio who is presently the Rt. Rev. Protopresbyter Sencio, Dean at the Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Volodymyr in Toronto.

Katherine has served the Ukrainian Orthodox Church as a volunteer in Poland, the United States of America, and from 1987 to present, in Canada.

Katherine worked for many years as a teacher and as the principal of a heritage school in the Toronto Board of Education. She currently teaches Sunday School at St. Volodymyr Cathedral. She is a proud mother and a loving grandmother.
