In Memory of UNF Windsor Members and Friends

Walter Leskiw

June 22, 1924 - September 29, 2011

Walter was born in Western Ukraine and came to Kirkland Lake, Ontario as a young boy. It was here that he first joined MYHO and then YHO. After finishing his tour of duty with the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII, he settled in Toronto where he again joined YHO. He had been an active member of the Windsor Branch for over 45 years. He was a tireless worker for whom no job was ever too big or too small for him to accept willingly. He had a great respect for OYK and was helpful and supportive of all of their activities.

In addition to the Ukrainian National Federation, Walter was an active member of the Windsor branches of the Ukrainian Canadian Professional & Business Association and the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. He was a warm and familiar figure at all Ukrainian functions in Windsor. He also maintained ties of friendship with his roots in Kirkland Lake and Toronto. He was a brother of Knights of Columbus, Sheptytsky Council 5079 in Toronto.

He was a dedicated member of Ss. Vladimir and Olga Ukrainian Catholic Church in Windsor and a cherished family friend of Rt. Rev. Eugene Halitsky who performed all the funeral and burial rites for Walter.

Walter is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Katherine (nee Popowich) and their precious daughter Andrea. Also surviving are his brother Danny Leskiw and wife Doris, cousins Steve Andrusiak and wife Larysa, and Nick Leskiw. He will be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews and godchildren.

Emil Pociluyko

June 6, 1936 - October 9, 2011

Emil was born in Manitoba and moved to Windsor with his family as a young child. He was enrolled in “Ridna Shkola” as a child and later joined Dorist MYH, MYHO and YHO. Although his death was sudden, he had been in declining health for almost two years. In spite of his limited capacities due to his illness, he continued to faithfully check the YHO Hall on a regular basis and attended monthly meetings. He was especially proud of his aluminum rolling pin that he used to help with pyrohy making at the Hall. At the time of his death, he was serving as a Vice President of the Ukrainian National Federation, Windsor Branch.

Emil worked in Windsor and Detroit and in the mid-1960s, he moved his family to Michigan. He returned to Windsor in the mid-1980s, where he owned and operated the local KOA Campground. Each summer he would generously give YHO the use of all the common grounds in the campground so that the Branch could host a large Ukrainian picnic.

Emil was active in all aspects of the Ukrainian community in Windsor. He was a member of Ss. Vladimir and Olga Ukrainian Catholic Church, and the local branches of the Ukrainian Canadian Professional & Business Association and the Ukrainian Canadian Congress.

Emil was the founding member of the Trident Investment Club, which spans the Metropolitan Detroit Area, Windsor and Essex & Kent Counties in Ontario. The club has been in existence for over 40 years and consists of friends made in “Ridna Shkola” and their spouses.

He is survived by his children Terry Pociluyko (Karen), Kate Рokorny and Chris Pociluyko (Chrissy) and their mother Barbara Pociluyko. He was predeceased by his daughter Mary Beth Pociluyko and his sister Alice Baranyk. Also surviving are his brother Eugene, three grandchildren and one great grandchild.

The loss of these two dedicated members leaves the UNF Windsor Branch with a sense of emptiness but with gratitude for their service and loyalty.
