Goldring Praises Ukrainian Independence in Parliament

OTTAWA – The day before the Embassy of Ukraine held a reception recognizing the 21st anniversary of Ukrainian Independence, Edmonton East Member of Parliament Peter Goldring touched on the issue in the House of Commons.

Mr. Goldring stated in the House on September 24, 2012: “Twenty-one years ago, Ukrainians overwhelmingly chose to return to the status of an independent nation…

I have seen how the people of Ukraine surely and steadily strengthened their democratic resolve. I also have no doubt that they will continue that progress with their upcoming Parliamentary election this fall.

Canada continues to support those who strive to achieve freedoms brought about by their desire for democracy.”

As a Member of Parliament, Mr. Goldring has been afforded the opportunity to visit Ukraine as a member of the Organization for Security and Co-Operation in Europe (OSCE) and for the University of Alberta. With the OSCE, Mr. Goldring has acted six times as an election monitor for both presidential and parliamentary elections to ensure that they were held in a fair and democratic fashion. Since Ukraine gained independence on August 24, 1991, the country has continued to work towards the democratic ideal.

On October 28, 2012 Ukraine will hold its next parliamentary elections. The outcome of this election is very important in keeping Ukraine on track to further strengthening their democracy.
