The UNF Foundation and the Shevchenko Foundation were both created to support the development of various projects which are organized by the Ukrainian community. So it’s not unusual that the idea sprang up to organize a golf tournament, the proceeds of which would be donated to the above mentioned foundations. The day of the tournament, Sept 10 turned out to be a hot fall day, but that wasn’t an impediment to the 110 golfers who turned out to play. The tournament, which took place at the Royal Woodbine Golf and Country Club, saw various dignitaries and special guests in attendance including MP Bernard Trottier, MP Ted Opitz, NHL hockey greats Mike Krushelnyski and Denis Maruk, Canadian Football Hall of Fame and Grey Cup Champion Damon Allen, UNF members and members of Ukrainian Canadian business circles. It was nice to see not just male foursomes but a female team competing, as well. It was a chance for pleasant conversations among friends and to exchange ideas and opinions.

After the tournament, all the golfers adjourned for dinner, which featured prizes and pleasant surprises. The M.C. of the evening was John Znaczko, the president of the development company SIR Group. He invited Father George Galea from the Roman Catholic Church Our Lady of Peace in Toronto to start off the dinner with prayers. He also took part in the golf tournament. After a delicious dinner prepared by Baby Point Catering, John Znaczko proceeded to the award ceremonies, which he led with great enthusiasm and humor. He was also helped by Golf committee member Eugene Masney.

The winning women’s team included: Oksana Rewa, Olia Sheweli, Olia Grod and Eva Stech. The top men’s team included: Mike Wertelecky, Alex Komarnicky, Borys Charchenko, and Victor Korotky. Many pleasant impressions and moments were created during the awarding of prizes that were handed out to golfers.Golf balls with Ukrainian ornaments were awarded to MP’s Ted Opitz, and Bernard Trottier and Mike Krushelnyski, Dennis Maruk and Damon Allen. Finally at the end of the event, Krushelnyski, Maruk and Allen shared some of their interesting moments from their professional athletic carrers.

The golf tournament was successful thanks to the hard work of the golf committee which included John Znaczko, Olia Grod, Christine Cahute, Oksana Rohatyn Wasylyk, Roman Litwinchuk, and Eugene Masney. They all deserve heart-felt thanks. As well, all the corporate sponsors need to be thanked and other individuals who supported this tournament financially. Corporate donors included the Ukrainian Credit Union, SIR Group Inc., LOT Polish Airlines, Metrospot Matketing Ltd., Right At Home Realty Inc., Caravan Logistics Inc. and B.A. Construction & Restoration Inc. We wish that future tournaments are equally successful and that the number of golfers grow each year. Next years tournament will be held May.
