UCC Open Letter on Language Law in Ukraine

OTTAWA - July 6, 2012 - The Ukrainian Canadian Congress issued an open letter by UCC President Paul Grod on the language legislation that has been introduced and has passed second reading in the Verkhovna Rada in Ukraine.

“The Ukrainian Canadian Congress calls on the entire Ukrainian community, and all Ukrainian organizations to express their opposition to this anti-Ukrainian legislation and to organize projects that enhance the Ukrainian language and Ukrainian identity in Canada and in Ukraine,” stated Paul Grod. “We further call upon the Ukrainian Canadian community to volunteer their time and financial support to the election observer mission for Ukraine’s fall elections to the Verkhovna Rada, which will have a positive impact on the state of democracy in Ukraine.”

The Congress has previously written a letter to Speaker Lytvyn and President Yanukovych asking them to cease debate on this unconstitutional law and for the President not to sign the bill into force if the law is adopted by the Rada.

The UCC has also initiated a petition which has received over 2000 signatures. Please sign the UCC petition supporting the Ukrainian language.

Several member organizations of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress under the leadership of the Canadian Conference in Support of Ukraine are organizing public actions in support of the Ukrainian language being held on July 18, 2012. More details on these public actions will be published as they become available.
