UCC Welcomes Introduction of Manitoba Ukrainian Canadian Heritage Day Legislation

Winnipeg, May 9, 2011 - The Ukrainian Canadian Congress welcomes the introduction of Bill 27: The Manitoba Ukrainian Canadian Heritage Day Act, by the Honourable Rosann Wowchuk, Minister of Finance as well as Bill 214: The Ukrainian Heritage Day Act, by Len Derkach, MLA for Russell.

“We welcome legislation which recognizes the significant role played by Ukrainian Canadians in building this great country,” stated UCC National President Paul Grod. “Such bills demonstrate the resolve and importance of Ukrainian Canadians contributing to the economic and social well-being of Manitoba and Canada.”

“We have worked very hard with the government and all political parties and hope that these bills will become law in this important year which marks the 120th anniversary of Ukrainian pioneer settlement in Canada,” said Manitoba UCC President Nellie Drozd. “Manitoba is the cradle of the Ukrainian Canadian community and it is appropriate that the contribution of Ukrainian Canadians to our Province be appropriately recognized.”

Once adopted, Manitoba will be the second province, after Ontario, to proclaim a Ukrainian Heritage Day.
