Re "Ukrainian-Canadians seeking compensation," Herald, Oct. 25. We are disappointed in the local coverage given the recent visit to Calgary of Lubomyr Luciuk, dealing with Canada's first national internment operations in 1914 to 1920 and their negative and long-term impact on Ukrainian-Canadian society.

Explaining that the national Ukrainian Canadian Committee has now formally requested the government of Canada to acknowledge that a wrong was done to Ukrainian and other East European Canadians during this period, Luciuk observed that the community has petitioned the federal government for a modest grant which would allow for additional research into this little-known episode of Canadian history. Another request is for historical reconstruction of the Castle Mountain internment camp, near Banff. Our association welcomes the initiative of the Ukrainian Canadian Committee, and we especially recommend that the federal government move expeditiously to resolve the Ukrainian-Canadian claim, certainly before 1991, our community's centennial year.

Rebuilding the Castle Mountain camp as an open-air museum and interpretive centre would serve to educate and inform all Canadians about this most unhappy episode in our nation's past and so help insure that no other Canadian group, of whatever ethnic, religious, or racial background, is ever again subjected to such unjust and unwarranted treatment.
